A solar park is not finished once the panels start generating electricity. The site continues to develop throughout the operational phase. Vegetation changes, species appear or disappear, and ecological measures sometimes have a different effect than expected.
Good ecological management therefore does not start with a fixed mowing schedule. It starts with understanding the site.
Start with a baseline survey
No two solar parks are the same. Soil conditions, water management, location, the age of the park, the surrounding landscape and the land’s previous use all influence how a site develops.
Targeted ecological management therefore starts with a baseline survey. For a new solar park, this takes place before construction begins. This establishes the ecological starting point before the site changes. At an existing solar park, a baseline survey provides an up-to-date picture of the site and creates a new starting point for management.
This includes:
- Existing vegetation;
- Vegetation, birds and flying insects;
- Soil and water conditions;
- Existing ecological measures;
- Connections with the surrounding landscape.
The baseline survey shows the current ecological state of the site and helps determine which ecological objectives are appropriate for the park. A new monitoring round then takes place every three years. This gives ecological changes enough time to become visible without monitoring more often than necessary. At the same time, it remains possible to adjust the approach if ecological quality is falling behind.
Monitoring makes management concrete
A species count shows how many species are present, but not whether a site is developing in the desired ecological direction. That is why monitoring focuses on trends over time. It tracks changes in vegetation, birds and flying insects, making it clear where management is working and where adjustments are needed.
The exact approach varies by location. Monitoring routes and measurement points remain fixed, however, so results from different years can be compared accurately. During each new monitoring round, the same routes are surveyed again.
The results are not always positive. Sometimes ecological development falls short of expectations. That outcome is valuable too: it shows that a measure is not having the desired effect and that a different management approach is needed. Monitoring is not there simply to present a positive picture. It provides the basis for credible ecological management.
From measurement to management
Many solar parks are built on former agricultural land. These soils often contain high levels of nutrients. Dominant grass species, such as perennial ryegrass, can quickly take over, leaving less space for other plant species.
One suitable measure is nutrient reduction: gradually lowering the nutrient levels in the soil. Mowing twice a year and removing the cuttings can form part of this approach. This removes nutrients from the soil and creates more space for herbs and flowering plants. Phased mowing also helps. Part of the vegetation is left standing, providing insects with food and shelter while birds and other animals retain habitat. After a period of time, the next section is mown, ensuring that enough vegetation structure remains across the site.
The right management strategy depends on the location. Nutrient reduction may work well at one site, while another may benefit more from improved water management, additional scrub or a different approach to managing the edges of the park. There is no standard solution.
Existing solar parks also offer opportunities
At older solar parks, ecological integration was not always systematically considered during construction. That does not mean ecological development has to stop there. An up-to-date survey shows the current state of the site and which measures could still make a difference. Management can then be adapted accordingly. Possible measures include species-rich grassland, scrub, bee banks, nature-friendly banks, bird boxes or bat boxes. Not every measure suits every location. A site with water offers different opportunities from a dry site. And more planting is not automatically better: some bird species specifically need open space.
The aim is to make the solar park as much a part of the surrounding landscape as possible, with its edges connecting to the habitats around it. That requires a site-specific approach for every solar park.
Ecology as part of asset management
Even after an ecological measure has been implemented, it remains important to track how the site develops. Is the vegetation becoming more varied? Is the presence of relevant species changing? And is the measure having the intended effect?
Insights from monitoring can then be incorporated into the ongoing management of the site. This shows where an approach is working and where adjustments are needed.
Ecology is therefore not a one-off consideration. It continues to develop alongside the solar park throughout its operational phase.
Ultimately, good ecological management is not about implementing as many measures as possible. It is about making the right choices at the right time.
